Rafer Guzman of Newsday gave the film a three out of four and portrayed it as "strong, all around made and entertaining". Christy Lemire of RogerEbert.com said she found the film captivating, composing that "it discloses to us a story we think we've heard on many occasions previously however with a refreshingly unique tone and level of detail". The Seattle Times' Soren Anderson said the film was "unfathomably better than the book that propelled it" and gave it a score of 3/4. Tony Hicks of the San Jose Mercury News was "snared by the mix of fine acting, fascinating reason and riveting scenery".Matthew Toomey of ABC Radio Brisbane gave the film evaluation of A−, offering applause to its charming reason saying that "it held [his] consideration for its full two-hour running time". Justin Lowe of The Hollywood Reporter said it was "reliably engaging", and Ella Taylor of Variety expressed "as world-creation YA pictures go, The Maze Runner feels refreshingly low-tech and legitimately story-driven".
